Resorcinol

Overview

Resorcinol is a white crystalline solid that turns pink upon exposure to light if not completely pure. The substance is flammable, although ignition is difficult. It is slightly toxic and is used to make plastics and as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. It is used in the production of diazo dyes and plasticizers and as a UV absorber in resins.

About

Resorcinol is a white crystalline organic compound with the molecular formula C6H6O2 or C6H4(OH)2. Its CAS is 108-46-3. Resorcinol has a faint, characteristic odor, sweetish taste followed by bitter taste, and is not classifiable as a human carcinogen. Resorcinol is used in industry in the manufacture of adhesives and sealant chemicals; dyes; functional fluids in closed systems; intermediates; plating agents and surface treating agents, paint additives and coating additives; and process regulators. It is also used medicinally in the pharmaceutical industry as an antiseptic and disinfectant, and is used 5 to 10% in ointments in the treatment of chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and sub-acute eczema.
